Ocotillo No 1, by Jake Beckman, is a
close in study a spray of the red flowers and yellow stamens, against a warm
gray field.
I think the ocotillo cactus is one of the stranger plants I have ever seen.
Most of the year it looks like an assemblage of straight dead thorny sticks,
usually around 10 feet or so tall, but throw a little water on it and it sprouts
small, round, close-in, bright green leaves and in the spring it will sport long
sprays of tiny red flowers at the tips of the sticks, which are quite beautiful.
Its also quite hardy, the locals used to make living fence posts out of
them. The name derives from the spray of flowers they put out-it means "little
torch" in Spanish.-Jake
