PopCult: Pop Culture is an endless source of amusement for me. Most of my work in the subject has been in the form of cartoon. Some of it political cartoon. But pop culture has clearly has crept into my art elsewhere as well. Recently I decided to embrace the concept of culture viewed in a social context. What is entertainment? What defines fashion? How does mass media and social media define what is popular? Is it merely the consumer market or something more? I especially enjoy the blurring of the lines between disparate concepts such as sports as fashion, politics as entertainment, personality as news. The self-referencing nature of these sound bites and factoids is fascinating to me. Even as I look at what I have classified as PopCult in my recent work, its still cartoon.-Jake
